When Dave, Carly, and I had dinner with some friends for Xmas, he was annoyed that I was completely and unabashedly jealous of the adorable daughter of two of our closest friends. After all, she — two months older than Carly — is communicating with both her parents and strangers at a level much [...]

After last night, I’m still glowing. I haven’t been reading much — just want to glow. It’s a new world for little Carly. Her childhood begins with an intelligent president, a true leader. It begins with a black family in the White House. It begins with a biracial man, raised in three countries by a [...]

Now that I’m the mom of a one-year-old girl, I must admit that I see things differently. In the days B.C. (Before Carly), I’d analyze advertising because I’m just wired that way — it’s the English & journalism majors in me. But now, they take on even more meaning.

The Bearded Guy

Last night we had Cincinnati-style chili over spaghetti (which is how you’re supposed to eat it, I guess), and Dave was so happy that he did a little dance in his chair. We had leftovers from Chili Fest — an annual party that friends of ours throw. Even Carly got into it — she liked [...]

Sometimes I feel like a horrible mom, even though I know I’m a really good one. But life can get really boring being home with Carly.
She doesn’t quite crawl yet — something I’m trying to deal with, as it’s hard not to compare her with all her baby-friends — so there’s not tons of stuff [...]
